Speech and Swallowing Problems

Speech Problems

Speech delay is the most common developmental disorder in preschool-aged children and is distinct from language delays. Several medical issues, such as ear infections, fluid in the ears, tongue-tie, or enlarged adenoids, can contribute to speech delays.

Monitoring your child’s speech milestones is crucial. If you have concerns, it is advisable to consult an ENT specialist. Key speech milestones to observe include:

  • 6 months to 1 year: Babbling and saying 1-2 words, such as "mama" or "dada."
  • 1 year to 2 years: Vocabulary of 20-50 words and the ability to combine two words.
  • 2 years to 3 years: Ability to form small sentences and be understood by family members.
  • 3 years to 4 years: Clear speech that is intelligible to most people, using sentences of four or more words.

Swallowing Problems

Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) can stem from simple causes such as ill-fitting dentures, the common cold, or poor oral hygiene. One of the most frequent causes is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid moves up the esophagus, leading to discomfort.

When swallowing issues persist, it is important to seek evaluation and treatment from a head and neck specialist. Dr. Schleiffarth and Dr. Howard are experienced in diagnosing and treating swallowing problems for patients of all ages.
